A look into the history of social networking
Social networking used to be much more difficult than it is today. Before the Internet people used to rely on face-to-face interactions and building a social network strictly based upon who they knew and further who their friends knew. When the Internet came about that changed everything and it became much easier to build a social network. There were many ways to network on-line including the friends list on Instant Messenger, blog sites, and Napster or other peer-to-peer software. The term “social networking” wasn’t used to describe these forms of communication until the invention of Friendster in 2003 which was the first friend-based site used for dating relationships. Friendster has coined the phrase, “What you need, when you need it” and expanded to use many other forms of social networking such as travel, entertainment, and electronics. Other major friend networking sites include: MySpace, Facebook, and eharmony.com. There are also sites for business networking including: monstertrak.com, ecademy.com, and MediaBistro.com.
